Are you starting to think about what you want your custom floor plan to look like?
For many folks who are designing their very own custom homes, coming up with the floor plan is the most exciting part. After all, your floor plan dictates how your space will be used, how rooms will flow together, and what kinds of structural flourishes you’ll get to enjoy. Essentially, your floor plan becomes the beating heart of your home.
Needless to say, then, there are countless things to consider when designing your custom floor plan. Here’s where you should start…
Your Lifestyle
Do you have (or plan on having) children? Do you love hosting large gatherings? Do you consider yourself an amateur chef?
Whatever your lifestyle looks like, your custom home floor plan should complement it. Make sure each room is designed to make your life richer and more comfortable, and that the overall layout logically fits with your needs.
Land Features
Is there a beautiful landscape near your home that you’d like a view of? What kind of deck or patio would best suit your backyard? Does your plot have enough room for a garage?
These are important details. The land conditions on your property will dictate whether you incorporate features like a large glass sliding door on the back of your house, a spacious wrap-around porch, or an attached two-car garage, for example.
Square Footage
Of course, the amount of space you have available will play a huge role in deciding how many rooms you’ll have and which features you’ll prioritize.
Amenities
Unfortunately, you can’t have everything, so make a list of your top four or five must-haves. Then, come up with a secondary list for everything else that would be “nice to have.”
